Panasonic has shown the world a new amazing product. The GH4. This camera is the first mirrorless stills hybrid that seems to be able to do it all. This one is amazing camera! 4K 10bit 4:2:2 out of the mini HDMI. Wow! You had me at 10bit! When you add the Panasonic LUMIX YAGH Interface Unit the GH4 turns into a uncompressed 4K camera with 3G SDI. This Pro Audio/Video Interface for LUMIX GH4 has the connections needed to turn the camera into a real high end 4K video broadcast camera with timecode out for a switcher and live multi camera switching. All this from a mirrorless camera. The body looks very much if not exactly like the GH3. Panasonic has stated that the GH3 is still in production and the GH4 isn’t replacing it. The overall layout looks to be the same as the GH3. I for one wouldn’t mind a little bigger body but it isnt a deal breaker. The GH3 is a popular camera and I enjoyed mine for sure. Micro Four Thirds is a cool format. The sensor is about half the size of a full frame one so with native MFT lenses you’re looking at a much smaller lighter shooting package. You give up a little on shallow depth of field. It’s still a large sensor camera and very capable to capture nice bokeh with fast lenses. So whats with all this 4K hype anyway? It’s here and it’s going to stay so no sense in arguing the merits of it. Shooting in 4K is much different than watching 4K. The advantages in post are large. Reframing in post for HD delivery is one, and down converting a finished project shot in 4K in HD always gives you a better higher quality image. Remember shooting in HD and delivering in SD? I do and the results where great. This is no different. Okay enough of this lets have a look at the specs and highlights of the new GH4! One big question I had was if the GH4’s Micro HDMI was capable of outputting 4K. It is! Thats a big deal but also a little problematic. No 4K HDMI recorders are available yet so the YAGH is the best option if you need to get a higher quality 4K codec.


16.05 Megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine

The GH4 has a whole new sensor and Venus Engine Packed with a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor it delivers high-quality images with high sensitivity and quick response times. Panasonic claims the increased signal speed readout will help to suppress rolling shutter. That is something I really want to test. With the quad-core Venus Engine image processor the GH4 is capable of ISO up to 25600.

Dual OLED Displays – Monitor and Live View Finder

The GH4 has a updated monitor as well as viewfinder. High-speed, organic LED displays are used for both the Live View Finder and the rear monitor. The 3.0″ monitor features a 1,036K-dot resolution, while the LVF features a 2,359K-dot resolution. These displays feature 100% coverage and a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. These are impressive advancements. Oh and yes it has Focus Peaking !

VFR (Variable Frame Rate)

Here is the lowdown on frame rates, and yes it does 96 fps! But only in HD.

4K Video Recording

The DMC-GH4 shoots 4K in 16:9 UHD 4K 3840×2160 video at 23.98p, 24p or 29.97p, and 17:9 DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) 4K 4096×2160 videos at 24p. 4K resolutions can be recorded as MOV or MP4 files in high bitrate 100 Mbps IPB codec. When recording at 100 Mbps, you will need an SDHC/SDXC memory card capable of handling the transfer speed. Choose the video format that is right for each project. From ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (All-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB). Available formats include MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive, and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates. In MP4 / MOV, high quality LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) sound can be recorded.

One of the most prominent advance is unlimited*1 4K video recording (Cinema 4K: 4096×2160 / 24 fps and QFHD 4K: 3840×2160 / up to 30 fps) in MOV/MP4*2. The DMC-GH4 is also capable of Full- HD video with ultra high bitrate at 200 Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB), which does not have limit of recording time*1. Users can freely choose the format from MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD at a variety of frame rates according to the usage [Figure#1]. In MP4 / MOV, high quality sound in LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) is recordable. For the global business of professional users, the system frequency can be flexibly selectable between 59.94Hz (23.98Hz) / 50.00Hz / 24.00Hz.

[4:2:2 10bit]:You can output the image through the HDMI connection in higher picture quality, but you cannot record it as a motion picture or still pictures. Ideal when the HDMI output is to be saved on external devices.

[4:2:2 8bit]:You can record the image while outputting it through the HDMI connection. Ideal for recording while checking the motion picture on an external monitor.When using 4:2:2 / 8-bit output, video is recorded in 4:2:0 / 8-bit on SDXC/SDHC Memory Card.

GH4 unit back

The codec is MOV, MP4, AVCHD Progressive and AVCHD. Not the best but we are used to AVCHD in cameras in the midrange. The good news is the HDMI does support 4K 4:2:2 10bit out. With an external recorder you can get ProRes or DHxHD and internal All-I compression at an impressive 200 Mbps. Yes I wish we could get AVC INTRA but that is a pro codec and for the assumed price of $2000 we shouldn’t expect it. This is the beginning of the 4K revolution and we will see a lot of new releases this year but I have to tilt my hat at Panasonic because they really made an exciting camera for today for and the 4K future.

I have never seen a unit like this for a stills camera before. This is a hybrid for sure. The two holes on the module look like they are for rails. However it does seem a little too low. Obviously this module isn’t for the hand held shooter but in a controlled production environment having the 4:2:2 10bit color is a big plus.

Open up the side flaps and low and behold four 3G SDI outputs. I don’t know if they are supposed to be used all at one for uncompressed 4K but I think thats why it has four. One would be for HD output. I’m just guessing here.

I will update this post as more information is released but for now I think this is a serious advancement for Panasonic and it really is innovative. The thing that Panasonic has over some of the other guys is they don’t have a full line of cameras to protect. The only other MFT camera is the AF-100a and I don’t think it will be updated. NAB will be telling about that. So why not make this GH4 a badass? The audio/video interface is pretty bulky and looks rather strange. It would be a tough camera to hand hold for sure but if it’s mounted to a tripod then it pretty much can be rigged the way other cameras are now and at least you have a dedicated way it mounts to the camera. I think this might work. I’m almost certain the interface is going to cost as much or more than the GH4 does.

Panasonic GH4 Overview

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is a true hybrid camera designed for both professional photo and video use. It features a 16.05-megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor and a 4-CPU Venus Engine, capable of capturing high-resolution JPEG and RAW stills, as well as UHD 4K 3840×2160 30p/24p and cinematic DCI 4K 4096×2160 video at 24p. Like its predecessor, the GH4 features a weather-sealed magnesium alloy body, while offering increased resolution on both the OLED monitor and electronic viewfinder. It also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC technology, in-camera creative controls, and a high-speed 49-point autofocus in both photo and video mode.

The GH4 delivers video quality surpassing many professional video cameras. Video can be recorded in a variety of formats, from efficient AVCHD and AVCHD Progressive, to 200 Mbps All-Intra and 100 Mbps IPB MOV and MP4 formats. And because the GH4 is a global camera, the system frequency can be switched between 59.94 Hz (23.98 Hz) and 50 Hz, yielding a variety of recording options including 23.98p, 25p, 29.97p, 50p, and 59.94p. The system can also be switched to 24 Hz to capture true 24p in HD and 4K resolutions.

Micro Four Thirds Sensor and Lens Mount

Wi-Fi with NFC Technology
The DMC-GH4 integrates Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC, letting you use the Panasonic Image App for remote photo and video shooting with compatible smartphones or tablets. The app also lets you embed location data to an image after shooting. If your mobile device isn’t NFC compatible, you can still connect to the camera by scanning a QR code displayed on the GH4’s monitor.
49-Area AF / Custom Multi AF
The newly developed AF system features 49 points, giving you more flexibility when composing shots. The Custom Multi mode extends that flexibility even more with the ability to freely select what blocks to focus out of the 49 possible focusing areas.
High-Speed Autofocus
The high-precision Contrast AF integrates DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology to achieve AF speeds of approximately 0.07 sec in AFS mode. This enables the camera to shoot bursts of 12 fps in AFS mode.
Silent Mode
The Silent mode switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns off sounds, while suppressing the AD assist lamp and flash with just a single setting. This is useful when capturing photos in situations where noise and light from the camera would be a distraction to performers or people around you.
In-Camera RAW Data Development
The DMC-GH4 delivers RAW images in-camera, letting you adjust the color space setting (sRGB / AdobeRGB) white balance, noise reduction, sharpness, and hue. Lumix’s Photo Style, Intelligent D-Range Control, and Intelligent Resolution can also be applied.
Picture Profiles
Choose from a range of Photo Styles and Creative Control modes. Photo Styles for stills or video include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, and Custom. Contrast, sharpness, noise reduction, saturation, and hue parameters can be adjusted for each mode and even set into the camera’s memory.

Real-Time 4:2:2 Output with HDMI
Send 4:2:2 8-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit video in real-time to external monitors or recorders via the micro HDMI output. An optional micro HDMI cable is required. When outputting a 4:2:2 8-bit signal over HDMI, video is recorded in 4:2:0 8-bit on the SDHX/SDXC memory card in the camera.
Focus Peaking
For easy focusing, the GH4 incorporates a Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF and AF+MF modes. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view. Focus peaking is also available while remote photo/video shooting with smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
Luminance Level Adjustment
In addition to the standard luminance level of 16-235 and 16-255, the DMC-GH4 also offers 0-255.

Professional 4K Video Interface Unit (Optional)
For professional video workflows, the optional AG-YAGHG Interface Unit is available. The Interface Unit attaches to the bottom of the camera and provides 2-channel XLR input terminals, for line or condenser microphones, with independent volume controls and an audio level display monitor. It also has four 3G-SDI BNC connectors for Quad-Link SDI 4K video in 4:2:2 10-bit or 4:2:2 10-bit HD, both with timecode. Power is supplied to the unit by a 12VDC 4-pin XLR input.Please note: When using 4:2:2 10-bit output, simultaneous video recording on an SDHC/SDXC memory card in the DMC-GH4 is not possible.
Interface
The DMC-GH4 comes with a variety of connection terminals including 1/8″ microphone and headphone jacks. The camera also features a micro HDMI port, AV output, flash sync terminal, and a 2.5mm remote controller jack.
Supports UHS-I Class III Speed SD Cards
The DMC-GH4 uses a variety of advanced recording media, including SDXC, SDHC, and SD Memory Cards. The fastest of these cards is the UHS-I Class III, which is recommended when using high bit rate video recording modes over 100 Mbps.
High-Speed Burst Shooting
The DMC-GH4 allows for high-speed burst shooting at 12 fps in single autofocus mode using the mechanical shutter, for up to approximately 40 RAW or 100 JPEG images, and 7.5 fps in continuous AF mode. This lets you capture fast moving subjects in clear focus. When using the electronic shutter, you can shoot in bursts up to 40 fps.
Highlight / Shadow Control
Highlight and shadow can be separately adjusted with the front or rear dial. Three patterns of settings can be customized in addition to three preset patterns.
Button Layout
For intuitive control, exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, and white balance controls are positioned around the shutter button to make operation fast and easy while looking at the viewfinder. A programmable function button is also available.

    I’m a little confused. So when you record straight to the card you can record at up to 200 Mbs / second but that is 4:2:0? So you loose a GOP codec but don’t get anymore color info?

    The question is, as both ex-AF100 owners, are we going to buy one?
    I suspect its a “maybe”. I think we’re going to see a deluge of interesting products arrive shortly.

    For me, going back to M4/3 is a deal breaker, metabones or not.

      I’m very interested but i have a little rule about not buying gear two months out from NAB. From the looks of things the GH4 probably will be available in March. I still have my Lumix zooms but sold my GH3 so a new MFT body would be nice.

    Hi Erik….just started to unpack and prep my GH3…bought too soon before the GH4 came out….but now I have discovered that in my original plan, I planned on recording stage performances remotely with Wifi as the camera was going to be elevated.

    To run MP4 with new firmware added……I think I am discovering that I can only record 30 minutes of MP4 before the camera shuts off ???????

    If I have a performance that is lasting 56 minutes……I cannot do it remotely ?

    I’d have to set the camera for .MOV quality and then get FILES that are in 4 GB large ? So if I want to edit this, I have to string these 4 GB clips together….IF THEY are not broken in time code…?

    I am confused and a bit pissed off that the camera does not allow me to do what I bought it for.

    Anyone have a work around or a reality fix for this concern ?

    Thanks Erik….I need someone who has used this camera.
