Atomos Introduces The Ninja Blade HDMI Version
The first thing I noticed when I turned the Ninja Blade on was how much better it is than the on board LCD screen on the C100. In fact it really shows how off the LCD is. The C100’s is much coole,r and well… off! Then I saw how sharp the image is. This is a real nice monitor and puts the Ninja 2 on ebay. Seriously if you need a monitor alone the Ninja Blade is that good and a very good value for a HD recorder and compact high IQ monitor. The one board tools are also very good. I setup my C100 LCD screen in magnification for focus and had the waveform on the Ninja Blade. What a great setup!
The Ninja 2 is a very popular external recorder but lacked a good monitor. In an effort to keep a rig compact and light having to also add a monitor didn’t make sense. Now with the new Atomos Ninja Blade you get all the great features that the SDI version has but in a HDMI only version at a very competative price of $995. The screen alone is amazing . 1280 x 720 5” SuperAtom IPS touchscreen, at 325ppi 179-degree viewing, 400nit brightness and multi-frequency (48/50/60Hz) operation. Check out the user interface demo here. I decided to pick one up since I also need another small monitor. I’m very pleased so far.
The Ninja Blade can record 10 bit 4:2:2 so if you have an uncompressed 10 bit signal you can can record it. On thing to remember. If your camera doesn’t output 10bit dont record 10bit. It won’t give you a better quality image. just a bigger file. Great features like Waveform and vectorscope are welcome tools that we need and are lacking in many monitors. Update 3-28-2014
A few issues have arisen with the Ninja Blade. The first is a pixel shift problem that basically takes the whole image a couple of pixels to the left leaving a black line on the right frame.
The other issue is a strange line pattern that only appears on the right side of the frame as appears below.
Atomos is aware and says fixing this issue is a top priority and will have a firmware update next week. I used my Ninja Blade on a commercial shoot with a C300 to see if my copy has issues and it does. I have to say I’m a little disappointed that Ninja Blade was released with these problems but pleased to hear Atomos is on top of it. When the firmware does get released i’ll instal and report back.

One big or should I say small advantage to the Ninja Blade is how compact it is and with the high IQ monitor you can roll without an extra one attached to the camera. Less weight and less batteries to worry about. I like the look of this new Ninja Blade. I upgraded.

The good new is that many of these HD cameras have a HD SDI video output, or at the very least a HDMI output, which allows for the output of uncompressed HD video into a new range of high quality and affordable portable recorders.
Do you know if at this point the Ninja Blade has any remaining issues or did they fix them. I just bought one about two weeks ago and wanted to make sure there was not anything to look out for. Thanks

Thanks Erik for that, was hoping that was the case because a ton of people were pretty upset with those guys in all the forums. One more quick question we want to record in the LT 422 because the HQ 422 is too much for us on our workflow. Do you think the LT version of that codec would produce that much of a difference compared to the internal codec? Thanks
At 1920×1080 ProRes LT is 102 Mbps. Thats still a strong codec compared to the AVCHD compression of H.264. In theory it should out perform it. ProRes 422 is 147 Mbps. Not that much difference. You will get a lot of conflicting ideas on whether to use LT or 422 and I feel confident that LT will be just fine. With saying that I tend to use ProRes 422 because I work in broadcast and would rather up the data rate a little just in case. Remember these are 10 bit codecs and are very efficient and the C100 is a 8 bit camera.
Is it possible to zoom in to check focus?
Would you recommend this if the primary use is as a monitor, say over a Smallhd ac7?
The Ninja Blade doesn’t have a 1:1 or punch in feature. I wish it did. The GH4’s magnification actual does send that through the Micro HDMI so you can check focus wit the Ninja Blade. That’s cool! If only the C100 worked like that. The NB is light but fat. Not really an issue but I prefer thin monitors like the DP6 that I still use.
The AC7 is 2″ bigger but thinner and is $400 less. If I could was to choose one today I would wait and get the Shogun. Did you like that answer? It’s way more money like $2000 but it’s like getting the best slim sized full HD 7″ monitor and a 4K SDI HDMI recorder.

Can you shoot 1080P with the A7S recording SLOG2 to the Ninja Blade with the Blade monitoring with a 709 LUT applied live?
I’m having a hard time finding this info out. From the Atomos website I understand the blade can deal with Canon CLOG to REC709 monitoring, I’m wondering if that can also be applied to the SLOG2 from the A7S.

Great fan of your work and experience! I know this has been discussed before, however… Do you find a significant difference in recording 10bit ProRes vs the 8bit AVCHD? Does it truly make a difference in color grading in post? Seems on paper it would, but in real life post scenarios is it what it claims to be… Advantageous? Oh, and thanks for all your postings and contributions of knowledge over the years… Always enjoy reading and seeing your take on things.

You have to pixel peep pretty hard to see the difference. I would recommend ProRes or LT. The sky gets hit the hardest with 8 bit 4:2:0 so depending on the shoot I might not use an external recorder
