Panasonic GH4 Vs. Canon 5D Mark III With & Without RAW

June 3, 20143 Comments

You knew it was coming…..

As seen in the earlier Vs. video. The C100 and GH4 this one to me has a clear winner on image quality. I pick the GH4. The 5D MKIII is just to soft and the RAW files look better but not by that much and it’s HD. The one thing lacking in the GH4 image is better separation from the background with depth of field. A faster lens is needed to achieve that look. I used to pull out the Voigtlander 25mm 0.95 a lot to get that super shallow look with my AF-100.

I keep hearing that the GH4 looks like video and I don’t get it. I find it funny that people seem to find a way to complain about the positive. The GH4 4K image is sharp and has less moire and aliasing than any DSLR shooting HD. That is huge! If people want a soft image then do some post production to it. You probably are anyway. Okay enough said. If I hear not filmic and videoish again today I’m going to puke! Ha!

A side note. The C300 is approaching the three year mark which is usually a product cycle so we could see a new model this fall. The C100 and C500 still have over a year to go. As for the 5D? It’s hard to say what will come next for it or possibly the end of the line. Sony and Panasonic adding 4K to their Hybrid mirrorless is a landscape changer. We shall see.

Here is the Side By Side Comparison Of The Canon C100 & Panasonic GH4

What do you think about the comparison and the future of the 5D?

Well, alright, I won’t say those words Erik! 😀

Something very interesting to me about this whole GH4 craze of late.

A few years back I was looking into the Canon EOS Cinema lenses and looked at so many reviews on youtube. Funny thing was, that in direct side by side comparisons with top of the line Zeiss glass, the Canon Cinema blew them away? and for tens of thousands less? The fact was, when I finally got my hands on them, they were no better or worse than the CP 2’s

Same with the 5D MK II and III now that I think of it. I have seen probably hundreds of video quality reviews about the 5D. Crystal clear, super theatrical blends, then the sweet image, no scratch that… AMAZING image. Hell just watch a season 4 of HOUSE and you’ll get the idea.

Which takes me to now and this video comparison. The 5D just does not look crappy or mushy like a lot of recent GH4 video comparisons I have seen. This looks about right for the 5D’s and it looks more filmic, oops. I mean, um. Well, let’s just say the images are more suited to a theatrical look, how’s that? As for the GH4, it has the videoish, umm… “like” contrast and deeper saturation because it is 4K downgraded I think. It’s a very punchy look almost like it was graded to have this certain look, when no changes to the look were actually applied.

AND, just a side note… why does everyone insist on comparing the GH4 to every other DSLR which does not do 4K? and show the awesome 4K downgraded. I don’t get that either. Maybe a head to head against Canon’s 1DC would be more fitting if the GH4 wants to keep spouting its awesome 4K. 😀

Unfortunately, the comparisons with the GH4 and any other non 4K shooting DSLR out there is like saying, “Hello everyone, Today we’re comparing two of Europe’s finest Super Cars, the 2014 McLaren F1 and the 1971 Volkswagen Beetle.

Wow this is really crazy. Guys of curse a sharper image is way better them a non sharper one. If you want to make a soft image sharper it will degrade in post. If you start with a very sharper image them you have way more room to play with in post.

I am amaze how people talk about FILMIC for the 5d3. I bet you they never got in a feature film set. Films are manipulated so much that they end up with a complete color and image characteristics them what they where adquired initially.

We forgot that more is more in film. And now no one is delivering 4k but, getting 4k into a 1080p project makes it looks from another world of wonders and goodies. 5d3 is still my main camera but I am sick of seeing other companies offering more for far less like Panasonic. Also I asked Erick about the 5d3 or the c100 and he recommended right, the c100 but I got all of my gear, slider jibs, everything for the smaller dslr size and now i see the gh4 a easy way to go and I can keep using my actual equipment.

What really make me struggle is the fact that there is not speed booster for the canon lenses on the gh4 format and I have way too much invested in3 zooms l glasses and 4 primes l series also 3 zeiss glasses for canon mount.

That zeiss are not better them canon lenses, wow we people really have very different way to see things. Like the Alexa camera it is not about the sharper or the bigger sensor or resolution, zeiss lenses deliver the best skin tones them lenses on their price range and also deliver the full spectrum and are full size lenses com, pared to just super 35 lenses on the canon. This means canon lenses are not covering the full sensor in the actual dragon epics or will never cover the next generations of 6 8 or whatever I sensors comes to the markt. So that means you will have to keep purchasing s35 sensor cameras just to keep your lenses alive.

So in effect, what you’re saying is it is unfair to compare the GH4 with any other camera because the GH4 is soooo very far ahead of the competition! 😉 Thus in your own words you’re agreeing with how totally awesome the GH4 is.

Just because the *current* (yup, they’re current cameras still being sold today. Not 1971 cameras) competition is crap, is no reason to complain about Panasonic GH4 reviews!!
