Big Canon 7D Price Reduction. Something New On The Horizon?

Canon 7D

The Canon 7D came down in price approximately 30% this week. This is the lowest price we’ve seen for the very popular S35ish DSLR. Hollywood loved it for it’s similar S35 field of view and Indie filmmakers that didn’t have the budget for a 5D MKII opted for it. Hey it’s also a great stills camera! So now you have to think. Should I buy one now? Well that depends. I personally wouldnt. I think the Canon 70D is a better camera with the latest autofocus feature. The Dual Pixel AF is one feature worth every pennie. What about the GH4 and Sony A7s? Yes thats a few hundred more and the A7s is over a grand more but you get a lot of camera too. These new hybrid cameras are truly remarkable. Check out my reviews for the GH4 and A7s.

Okay since I have both. The Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7s I have to say at this moment in time Canon has nothing interesting to offer against them. It’s true. I dont even have to explain it but I will.

GH4.

High frame rates and Internal 4K. Nuf said. Yes it’s very good.

Sony A7s.

Full frame and APS-C mode plus ISO that sees in the dark and it’s actually usable. 51,000 ISO looks pretty dang good! This is insane! It also is capable of 4K with an external recorder.

Okay I’m not going to list all the pluses on these new cameras over Canons video enabled DSLR’s because the list is too long but I love my Canon lenses and they know how we like to keep them longer than bodies.

So what’s going on Canon? Well I hope they have a new and exciting product just around corner. The rumor sites are all abuzz about the replacement for the 7D and even have pictures of a undisclosed photographer at the World Cup shooting under a white cover. Nice move in being discreet right? So what does this new camera have that will compete with the new Panasonic and Sony cameras? I have no idea but I can say it better have some kind of 4K option and the video IQ has to be at par with these new releases or I think it’s just a stills camera and video folks like us won’t care. A lot has changed with video IQ since the 5D MKII.

A year ago I didn’t think we would have hybrid cameras that can shot 4K video. I was more in the mind set that we would move away from them because better tools are available with large sensors that are full featured cameras like the C100 and FS700, but it didn’t go that way. Hybrids are actually getting the features we have with video cameras but in a smaller form factor. Now I can get behind this a little more. Really all I need is a nice set of ND filters. The C100 LCD and EVF are lame compared to the A7s and GH4. Now I’m not saying I’m going to switch from the C100 to those other new guys in the house but it’s getting very close. Audio is the one thing that holds me back.

Like Panasonic a year ago with no new large sensor camera after the AF-100 and we all wondered what the heck is Panasonic doing? They are lost. (Yes I said this too) it’s now Canon in that light. How quickly the tables turn.
