Will the GH4 And Atomos Shogun Work To Record 4K?
This question doesn’t have an answer yet since the Atomos Shogun isn’t shipping and no one has claimed it will or won’t function properly. We do know that Sony and Atomos worked together to pair the two but after seeing this video from MichaelTheMentor on his YouTube channel it kind of threw me back a little. I’m wondering if it will work.
Michael claims that he couldn’t get more than 5 to 10 seconds of footage at a time to record with 4K AJA KiPro with two adapters. Basically taking the Micro HDMI output from the GH4 and feeding it to two adapters to get quad SDI into the AJA 4K recorder. Granted this is kind of a mess but he says the Sony A7s worked perfect and the GH4 dropped frames and had limited recording lengths.
The answer is with Atomos for now. No one has had the GH4 and Shogun together yet. I hope this isn’t the case because I do want to use the Shogun with my GH4 and yes even in 4k.
I was thinking maybe this is why the GH4 needs the YAGH to get 4K 10 bit out of the camera. I hope this isn’t the case. A lot of GH4 users will be very unhappy if they have to buy the YAGH and the Shogun.
On the Atomo forums someone posted concerns about the Shogun based on using the Ninja recorder in the hopes issues will be resolved with the Shogun. Here is a quote from Atomos.

Atomos have made a commitment to ensure that both of the cameras have the best user experiences with the highest possible video quality that can’t be matched.
We can confirm that we are working with Panasonic so that the GH4 will capture at 4K UHD, 10-bit 24/25/30p ProRes into the Shogun with an announcement expected in the future.
Panasonic and Atomos will continue ensure that these two products are incredible devices that will continue to give you the best professional solution.

One thing I like about Atomos is they get right to work on issues and really care about the customers experience with their products. I have contacted Atomos and hopefully will get some information soon that I can share with you.
