Sony releases Four Lenses For E Mount A7 Cameras. My Favorite. The FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS

February 13, 20150 Comments

I have a love hate relationship with my A7s and lenses are a big part of it. The Metabones EF to E Mount has some serious issues and autofocus doesn’t work at all with the Canon EF mount lenses. For video I can get by but for stills I want and need autofocus. Here are the new Sony E-Mounts unveiled at CP+

  • 35mm F1.4 FE FE
  • 28mm F2
  • FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS
  • FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 lens

Good news for E Mount users today! My favorite is the FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS. I love macro lenses. It’s so nice to be able to get a real tight shot without the fun house effect of having a lens to close to the subject. I shot this promo with a Canon 100mm Macro and the Metabones adapter. All the house and kitchen shats are the A7s and Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+ in 4K. The rest is the Canon C300.

Matt Allard from Newsshooter.com is at CP+ and got his hands on the four new lenses and shot some footage of these new E mounts.

I’m not a big fan of variable f-stop lenses but the range is sure handy on the 24-240 f3.5-6.3. Matt mentions it gets soft in the longer range.

Here is what Matt had to say about the 90mm Macro.

It is very sharp and the OSS definitely makes a big difference when shooting any type of macro work. Even when not used as a Macro lens the 90mm looked to provide nice separation between your subject and the background. Build quality was very nice and was right up there with any of the FE ZE lenses on offer.

Sounds like a winner to me!

The new 28mm is a specialty lens that has the option of adding a two new wide angle lens converters to it. The Ultra Wide Converter will give a full frame field of view of 21mm, and the Fisheye version will give you a 16mm full frame field of view. Not sure about this one.

The new Distagon T* FE 35mm F1.4 ZA is faster and much larger than the Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens. The design features a selection switch to enable hard click stops or click less aperture. Thats a sweet feature for video use. I would like to dee more lenses with this feature. The Zeiss Loxia does this too but it’s a screw and on the inside of the mount.

This chart shows what Sony’s plan is for the E-mount and expects more than 20 FE lenses by 2015. Well it looks like the road map is getting on it’s way and as you can see in 2015 Sony has plans for several or maybe 7 if the empty gray bars represent an actual new fast prime that will be released early in 2015.   Sony E Mount Road Map

Out of all these the 90mm Macro is the one I want to try out. I dont have a long lens in the E-Mount now and sure love me some Macro!
