Lets just get to it! The specifications are pretty good. RED claims the Raven has a whooping 16.5+ stops of dynamic range. Wow! I’m sure the tech guys are putting in on the bench to check this. The Raven uses a 8.8 Megapixel RED DRAGON sensor cropped to APS-C. You can record to ProRes but only in 2K.

ProRes 2K

Apple ProRes 422 HQ up to 2K (2048 × 1080) and up to 60 fps
Apple ProRes 422 up to 2K (2048 × 1080) and up to 60 fps
Apple ProRes 422 LT up to 2K (2048 × 1080) and up to 60 fps

For 4K it’s REDCODE with compression rates are as follows.

3:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 × 2160) at 24 fps
7:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 × 2160) at 60 fps
13:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4K (4096 × 2160) at 120 fps
The Raven has some nice frame rates. 4K up to 120 fps. In 3K up to 160 fps and 2K up to 240 fps.
The aluminum Alloy body weights only 3.5 lbs making a very good drone and gimbal camera when stripped down.

RED RAVEN BRAIN ONLY PACKAGE $5950

RED RAVEN JETPACK PACKAGE $9,750

RED RAVEN BASE I/O PACKAGE $9950

Oddly none of these packages include batteries. I would think a V Mount would be a better solution to power the Raven but whatever you choose it’s going to add at least another $1000 to the camera. With that, I wouldn’t look at the Red Raven as a bargain. The Base I/0 package is $9950 with added extra media and a battery solution it’s going to go to $12K easily.  If you’re a Red camera user already and have some of the accessories then the brain only is an easy purchase but if you come to Red Camera with the Raven be prepared to enter a new eco system with very expensive add-ons. You could save a few bucks by not buying the LCD touch screen if you have a EVF or external monitor but the Raven uses the touch screen for menus settings. You would need to use the remote to access the menu.

Now we know what Red is up to. The Raven looks like a very good camera with some nice features. ProRes is great and Redcode is big advancement in codecs compared to the H.264 garbage we have in most cameras these days. If you can afford it it will be a nice tool for sure. Lets hope Red cam delivery on schedule. Shipping is March 2016. Red requires a deposit of $500 for the brain only and $1000 on the kits.
