Real World Sony a7s mkII Samples Plus Shipping Starts this Week
Here are three new Sony a7s II videos shot by Mark Galer. I like the look of the 4K image. Has lots of detail on small objects. These cameras are getting insanely good. Check out the cruise ship and the rails on the deck. No moire just pure detail. Some banding but that should be expected with compressed video on the web and of course the a7s II is a 8bit camera. No free lunch right?
I’m looking forward to getting one to play with and seeing how much better it is compared to the original a7s I have. Will I upgrade? Probably. Will you?
A few of the upgrades I’m looking forward to.
- 4K internal. Please don’t have heating issues!
- IBIS. In camera stabilization is amazing on the a7r II
- Improved Color Science. The a7s II has the same Color Science as the a7r II and it’s better. No more green cast in LOG
- SLOG3. Need to test this but it’s supposed to be cleaner and have even more shadow detail with better highlight control.
- Improved Auto Focus. I hope the EF to E Mount Metabones adapter will work better,. As is on the a7s it doesn’t. Manual focus is the only way to go period.
- In camera LUT. This is a life saver. Very difficult to focus and set exposure without a LUT and having it built in so you see the Res.709 look in the EVF and LCD is HUGE!
The a7s II is supposed to start shipping on October 16th. That’s this Friday!

I plan on getting one!
Picked mine up this morning.
Quick thoughts:
Much better colour with S Log3, psuedo-LUT a brilliant idea
MUCH easier to operate: faster
EVF is great.
4k files very solid.
Haven’t done a heat test yet.
Haven’t found much stabilisation benefit yet on non-Sony lenses (I suspect operator error)
AF works with my Commlite adapter and 24-105.
Aggressive lens crop in 120 frame is….tricky.
I wasn’t a fan of the original, but already like this version much more.
Will replace my trusty GH4 as B Cam to my FS7.
I can’t wait to see some reviews on this camera… This might be the one that makes me leave my beloved Gh4 and come over to Sony. I am just hoping they give us an idea what the Gh5 will be before I jump over but who knows when that is coming out. I love the in camera Lut which will so helpful plus internal 4k… thats going to be a big deal for everyone. 🙂
