Sony A7s & New A7s II S-Log2 Side by Side Comparison

Newsshooter video test: Sony a7S vs a7S II colour in S-Log ungraded from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

Dan Chung from Newsshooter.com was at the Sony a7s II event in Germany and had some quality time with the a7s II. He posted this video so I downloaded the clip from Vimeo and had a go at grading it in DaVinci Resolve 12. No LUT just adjusted the image to sort of de-Log it and add in a little saturation. No color adjustments were made. Then copied the grade and applied it to the other.
I’m surprised how similar they are. In fact they look pretty much identical.

The red’s seem to have a touch more depth but that is so slight. I see this on her lipstick but not so much on the jacket. Skin tone on the a7s II looks to have a touch more blue but again so slight it’s just hard to see it unless you stare at the image for a while.
To bad the artist had pale white make up on. Harder to see skin tone but if you look around her neck you get a better idea how it looks. Practically identical right?

I have mixed feelings about this. The a7r II had much cleaner S-log color. No green push like the A7s does. Sony claims the color science from the a7r II is now in the a7s II but in this example it doesn’t appear to be. What do you think? Not very different as far as color goes.

I wanted to see if I could warm the white base make up and it was easy!

Slow burn: Sony a7S II shoots 120 fps in low light with Zeiss Loxia 21 and Milvus lenses from Dan Chung on Vimeo.

Dan also did this very impressive 120fps test. This looks great and the best part is it’s full 1080p HD. The fire juggler is lit with only the fire sticks. Impressive!

My copy will arrive next week and looking forward to playing. Stay tuned! 😀

    Hello,
I downloaded the Sony a7S vs a7S II colour in S-Log ungraded footage you mentioned to take a look at the comparison more closely.
It seems the pre-highlight and highlight areas of the A7sII are more subdued and give/create an “appearance” of better roll-off than the A7s with of course with the apparent positive changes in color rendering in the A7sII as well.
Maybe I am crazy, but it seems the reason the first comparison of the girl in two “portrait” still frames you have compared(graded) here are the same, is because I think they are actually from the same clip section before the video switches to the A7sII footage. They look like screen comparisons of around the 32sec mark to the 36sec mark. One can most easily tell due to the fact that the girl shown in original video, holds the color checker much closer to her face for the A7sII portion of the video and not the same distance as shown in your comparison images above.
Would be great to see the comparison….. Enjoying the blog. Thanks
