Full Frame Leica SL has Panasonic VLOG Included. Wait..What? Could this be?
After I heard and read about the new Leica SL having 4K with VLOG from Panasonic it had me thinking.
Does Panasonic have a full frame sensor and it’s in the Leica SL?
It could very well be or it just has the processors from Panasonic. Now I’m not interested in the Leica SL camera really. It’s nice and has some sweet features but I can’t justify it for over $7000, but what’s inside of the camera has me thinking…. Now if this sensor is in fact a Panasonic one that means that Panasonic could move into the full frame mirrorless hybrid world very soon. The Leica SL also has full size HDMI. YES! Full size. Finally! Wait Erik. Don’t like that feature to much 😀
The camera also offers up 10bit 4:2:2 out of that full size HDMI. Sounds familiar? Yep. Just like the GH4 does. VLOG? 10bit out? Hmmm.
I don’t know much about Leica cameras. Not my thing, but after some research I found out that Leica has been working with sensor developers that partner with Panasonic and of course Leica has been making lenses for Panasonic cameras for a long time. The Leica Q Typ 116 had a sensor made by TowerJazz that has a joint venture with Panasonic. As for the sensor in the Leica SL? Some reports say it’s the same but I don’t think it is. I do think it’s made by the same company. TowerJazz and Panasonic.
So with my fun speculation hat on I would say it’s very possible we could see a new line of hybrids from Panasonic using a Full Frame sensor. This would really make things interesting for Sony since they are sitting all alone with the likes of the a7r II and now the upgraded a7s II. Sure is fun to speculate right? Now lets see how good the skin tone and image quality is before we get to excited.
Nice sample video. Lots of lines and patterns that don’t seem to be an issue with moire. Interesting.

$7k? Hmmm..
Terrific warranty? (a la their version of FZ1000 vs Panny’s)
