Using your iPhone for journalism is growing and in general we tend to pull out our iPhone and shoot video more than with a proper video camera. It’s great to be able to have access to a very good quality image these days that fits in your pocket. The onboard mic on the iPhone is decent but with the Røde VideoMic Me it just upped the quality by a lot. Lets face it we can tolerate bad video quality but bad audio is so annoying it makes watching unbearable. Using the VideoMic Me gives your videos clear and much more pronounced audio quality.

Here is the VideoMic Me in action. This is a news promo. The reporters audio was captured with the VideoMic Me. The edit was a little tricky but the sound is really good!
The lightweight directional cardioid microphone connects directly into the headphone jack on the iPhone. It doesn’t require any external power. Plug it in and it works. The design is very clever on how it mounts to the iPhone. It comes with a clip that slides on the back of the VideoMic Me and clamps on the iPhone. The connection is surprisingly secure.
If you want to monitor the audio the VideoMic Me has a mini jack on the back too. Just plug in your headphones to monitor. For $59 you even get a professional style dead cat windscreen. No more crappy audio! 😀

iPhone journalism is growing and getting great audio is a must to keep the audience engaged in the story. Heck just being able to hear Johnny at his birthday blowing out the candles is important too. The Rode NTG 4 is great. If you have a bigger budget the NTG 3 is the bomb!
