Sony FS5: Shooting at 240 Frames Per Second
FS5 240 FPS TEST from Erik Naso on Vimeo.
I wanted to see what 240 FPS looks like with the FS5. I used the Sony 18-105 lens for all these shots. Yes some are soft and I feel it’s me. I was obsessed with these kites and framing the sun. Ugh….
The compression on Vimeo took a toll on some of the shots with banding. The original file looks good. I recommend you download the ProRes LT version.
I’m struggling with focusing using peaking. I have it set at high but it just isn’t working very well for me. Shooting at F16 to get the sun star also made it tougher. Not the sharpest part of most lenses and the focus range widens. Anyway I like the footage and it was fun to shoot. I’ll try more latter at a more reasonable F-stop it’s just those sun stars are so cool!
The buffer is something I have to get used to. The camera was set for “End Trigger” and that didn’t work well for the kites. I missed the end shot because the buffer ran out. To bad. I would have liked the helicopter to have flown all the way through the frame.
The 18-105 is a nice lens with great coverage on the cropped S35 sensor. I’m very interested in this lens. It makes shooting fast. Reminds me of the Canon 24-105.
I edited with Final Cut Pro X and graded Color Finale. I’m getting more comfortable with FCPX. Color Finale is really very good. Makes grading fast with tools I’m used to using.
I really miss a waveform monitor. Yes it’s tiny on the FS7 but it works for me. The Zebras are really thick so I have them set as a custom function to turn on and off faster. I think I need to push the exposure one more stop. I have a few under exposed shots that are very nosey and unusable. It’s a reminder how important it is to get the exposure right. I want to shoot a sunset this week and I’m thinking Slog might not be the best for this. I feel lowlight and log mode just don’t go well together.
Check out my first test with Slog2 and post HERE.
I’m doing these mini reviews as I shoot and will wrap all this up into one final review. More to come!
