Sigma Introduces 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art & MC-11 Adapter for Canon EF to E Mount
I don’t which of the two I’m more excited about! Lets start with the MC-11 adapter. We all know the Metabones is just awful when it comes to auto focus and no real viable competition exists that performs better.
Until now with the MC-11 Canon EF-Mount to Sony E-Mount adapter. The adapter retails for $249
Sigma has developed the MC-11 Mount Adapter for using Canon EF orSigma SA lenses on their mirrorless bodies. It has been optimized to work with Sigma’s communication system to maintain the excellent AF speed, aperture control, and image stabilization operation of the lenses. Also, the MC-11 features an LED display that will show users whether the attached lens is fully compatible or if the adapter needs to be updated. The MC-11 has an internal control system that can help correct for distortion, chromatic aberration, and vignetting. Additionally, the adapter offers complete transmission of EXIF data and has internal flocking to prevent internal reflections. This is all very interesting and I sure want to try it out. Again my experience wit the Metabones adapter has been frustrating. I have the 18-35 and the 50mm ART. To get full auto focus functionality from them on Sony E-Mount cameras would be killer!

Will the MC-11 adapter work with Canon lenses? Ah thats a great question and we wll have to test it out to know. Sigma clearly has deigned the MC-11 adapter to work with Sigma lenses best but I bet it might just work on Canon models as well.

Sigma continues to release new high quality ART series lenses and the new Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF ($1100) is the new tele in the line up. The lens is fast. I don’t know of any f1.8 constant aperture zooms like this. This 50-100 is APS-C (80-160mm 35mm equivalent) so it will be a great fit for the FS7, FS5 with the new MC-11 adapter, also the new a6300 that is coming soon. Oh and I suppose it will be great for APS-C Canon bodies too 😀 Early reports are saying the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 is parfocal meaning it holds the focus when zooming. For video shooters thats a big deal. I know I like getting multiple focal length shots without refocusing.
I think the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 paired with the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is a fantastic pair. Two very fast constant f1.8 zooms that cover several primes.

- 160mm (not really a 200mm and a strange way to end but it’s almost 200mm 😀 )
Thats a nice six lens set! Seven if you count the odd 160mm. Only focal range missing is a super wide like a 16mm and 24mm. I actually rarely go that wide for my work. The Tokina 11-16 would be a very nice lens to have in the kit for wide shots and it’s f2.8
The one bummer is no image stabilization. Not sure why it doesn’t have it. The AF system can be override and the manual focus isn’t focus by wire. Much better for video use.

Both the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens and new MC-11 adapter can be updated with a USB dock. Both are very cool and I hope to get my hands on them. Especially the MC-11 adapter. This one could be a big deal folks.

Hey Erik,
Do you think you will be picking up the 50-100? I know it doesnt have IS but to be honest what cinema lenses have IS either? to me thats not an issue as it will most likley be locked down shots unless heavily stabilised.
the key will be waiting to see how the image performs.. if its good then the 18-35 and the 50-100 will be my only lenses in my kit and I will get rid of my primes as there will be no need for them over the convenience.. to get 1.8 throughout that high focal length is amazing! the price is about right too..
I want to try it. Your are right it would make a great pair with the 18-35 and early reports are the MC-11 adapter works really well with the a7 camera.
Spot on, Sigma. I took a whole bag of lenses away with me last week and used the 18-35mm for almost every shot.
