NAB VIDEO: SmallHD goes BIG HD with Three New Heavy Duty Production Monitors.

It was only a matter of time that SmallHD would go BIG HD and at NAB they should off three new Production monitors that are built like a tank and ready for field use with several key features making usability out on a shoot a big priority.

I’ve been using SmallHD monitors for a while now. DP4, DP6 and now 502. The new line are not just big they’re also bright and HDR ready. the 32″ model has a bright 1500 NITs brightness and the 17 and 24 are 1000 NITs. I have been wanting a bright monitor for some time now. Shooting outside with a hood is a real pain and it doesn’t work all that well especially if you are shooting.

The 32″ has true HDR rendering so it has the edge over the 17″ and 24″ models if HDR is important to you. The 24 and 17 inch models look to have similar specifications.

The new monitors have a very cool mounting feature called the RapidRail shoe-mount system. The rear of the monitor has cutouts that can accept standard shoe-mount accessories. Much better than velcro tape right? Three USB ports and a 12V LEMO output can provide power to wireless units or other mounted accessories. The Production Monitors can accept mains AC power or DC from a 4-pin XLR or via a separately available V-mount or Gold-mount battery plate.

The Production Monitors also feature the Page Builder OS. This graphical user interface provides an intuitive way to navigate the deep functionality of the monitors using a joystick. This is probably similar to the way the new 502 models work. The production monitors add physical front-panel button controls for even quicker access to monitoring functions. Also like the 500- and 700-series monitors, the Production Monitors can independently downstream LUTs to outboard monitors. This allows the director or client to see a LUT-corrected image, while the DP can see a full-range image with scopes and assist functions.
