Sony PXW-FS7 Firmware Update V4.00 Now Available

June 27, 20160 Comments

I missed this one last week since I was hiking in the Yosemite Valley. The update isn’t huge but does have some nice updates like support for XAVC-I 4K 24.00P and operability of S&Q setting by assignable button is improved.

Contents of update
1. Support for Flexible Spot in Focus setting.
2. Support for XAVC-I 4K 24.00P.
3. Display for Video Signal Monitor is improved.
4. Operability of S&Q setting by assignable button is improved.
5. Remove Basic Authentication from items saved in all file.
6. Auto knee stability is improved.
7. Overall stability and operability of the camera is improved.

The Flexible Spot Focus sets the target area for push auto focus (See page page 40 of the updated User Manual).
Center: Focuses on a subject in the center of the image.
Flexible Spot: Focuses on a specified position in the image.

The FS7 auto focus isn’t nowhere as good as the mirrorless a7rii or a7sii cameras and in my limited testing the FS5 performed better as well. I’m looking forward to testing this feature since having a quick way to focus can come in handy “if” it works without hunting. As usual AF works best with native lenses.
