Waiting for the Apple M1X or whatever it’s going to be called

The Apple M1 is proving to be a powerhouse and a real game-changer for computing. Long battery life on the laptop models, low heat oh and incredible performance equals a must-have, especially if you are already a Mac user.

I have an ancient and starting to die 2013 Mac Book Pro that I have been saying I will replace every six months for the last 2-years, and I haven’t. I’m that guy who uses a computer until it dies, and my MBP is on its last keystroke. The battery dies quickly, the touchpad doesn’t work well, and the seal around the monitor is breaking down. Someday I’ll flip the lid, and the screen will fall on the floor, but it still boots up!

I buy the best one when it’s released and abuse the living hell out of it. While this may not be how Apple likes me to act, I feel I save money in the end since I’m not upgrading every two years.

You might remember way back in 2015; I did a $550 processor and ram upgrade to a 2009 Mac Pro. I squeezed every penny from that system, and it was great. The performance was similar to the first trash can macs at the time. I had a Quadro 4000 GPU and upgraded that one to an NVIDIA GTX TITAN X 12 GB that was flashed for Mac. Not a bad system and lasted a long time. When I say long, I mean it! I finally bought a 2017 iMac in November of 2018, which is still my main editing computer. While it’s working fine, for the most part, I do use proxies more than I have in the past due to compressed codec performance. Camera companies must be in cahoots with computer makers as every new codec keeps getting harder to edit. I digress.

Need it now delema

The worst position to be in is when you need a new laptop now. I was sort of in this position as I was planning to go to Cine Gear and didn’t trust my old MBP on a critical job. What to do? Get the M1 13″ and use a 15″ external portable monitor? Buy a refurbished Mac Book Pro? Get a Dell? No!!!!! Dude, you are NOT getting a Dell.

The good news for my wallet is I’m not going to Cine Gear, so crises diverted, but that doesn’t solve the issue, or I suppose it does for now. The word on the street is the more pro version of the M1 is coming maybe by the end of September, and hopefully, Apple will price these as competitively as they did with the first round of M1’s, namely the Mac Mini, iMac, and 13″ Macbook Pro. The iPad is also very impressive, but I don’t need one; my trusty iPad Mini serves me well enough for my needs.

New era for Apple

The new Apple Silicon is a new era for Apple. Moving away from Intel CPUs and AMD GPUs has to make financial sense as well. This is why I’m hoping the new lineup of Apple Silicon computers will be priced more competitively since they don’t have to partner with two other companies for the core of the systems. Everyone always complains about the price of a Mac. I get it, but as I said, I use them until they die and in reality, they don’t just the world of computing outgrows them.

I’m saving my lunch money for that new 15″ or 16″ Macbook Pro and maybe a powerhouse iMac too. 2021 might be an expensive year for computer purchases.

Are you interested in these new Apple M1 or M1X computers? Maybe you are a Windoz user and will jump ship?
