The RED Scarlet Deal Of The Year. Now what?

I was surfing the web today and found out about this crazy RED Scarlet deal. Looks like a major production rented a bunch for a single shot. This is what Jarred from RED said  “I can’t tell you much about it.. but we just did a massive project with a need for a pretty special 3 second shot, so they rented a whole truckload of Scarlets from us … more Scarlets than most people have seen in their lifetime.
None of them had more than a minute of record time. We can’t sell them as new.. and the rental was good.. so we are giving you guys a one time break on these as ” Battle Tested ” Scarlet.
$7100 instead of the regular $11,900. Scarlet Brain, Side SSD and Canon Mount. And because I know someone will ask, you can’t swap the mount to a Nikon or PL for this deal.
They come with the standard Battle Tested 90 day warranty.. but we will open up RED ARMOR just on these since we were with them 100% of the time that they were out of the box and are as close to brand new as you can get.

This is a crazy good deal! You save $4800! That’s not a typo! I wish I could jump in even knowing that I would have to spend at least a couple more grand to get up to shooting speed. I’m seriously looking to see how I can do this but I’m afraid by the time I get it together all the cameras will be gone. I cant even believe I’m writing this because you might end up with my camera! So what more would I need? Well a touch screen would probably be a must ($1600) and at least two SSD cards ($725 each). Oh and a Red Station Redmag to off load ($250) I have two Canon lenses and both are “L” f4. I do have a nice set of PL lenses. Going to need the TI PL mount. Lets see? How much is that one? What?! $2000?! Crap!!!! What am I missing?

I have Gold Mount batteries but would also need a way to mount them on the Scarlet. I found one for $600. Yikes! So it looks like I will be in for at least another $5000 before I’m ready to go. I have to do some serious soul searching and quick. How in the heck am I going to sleep tonight. Oh man! Maybe I can wait and get a PL mount later but then what will I do for lenses. The two I have are great but slow. Maybe buy some fast Canons? This is crazy! Do I really need this camera. That’s a stupid question and I wont answer it. OK I don’t really need it but dang it’s a great deal and I could build on the system over time. Hmm. I like the way that sounds. Lets try to sleep on it………

I cant sleep. I need to figure this out before it’s to late.

The funny thing with Red cameras is it takes a bunch of expensive pieces to create a usable camera and that is the gotcha. It’s funny that even with saving $4800 your still paying a large amount of cash and it’s hard to know if you can upgrade the Scarlet to the new sensor from Red when it’s available. It might be cheaper to get a new camera. Who knows. Thats the nature of Red in a way. I still lust for it and if I can pull it off I’m going for it!

What do you think? Worth it?

    • Sorry to hear that! I didn’t pull the trigger on the Scarlet deal and I do have a little regret however so many new cameras are coming so I’m sure I will find the right one for the majority of my work.
