So many new cameras came out this year (2012), but to be honest none of them are really what I would buy to replace my AF-100. Why? Because they all still have major ergonomic issues and they cost about 2 times more than the AF-100. Sure many of them have better sensors or offer high frame rates but the issue still remains. They are all ergonomic nightmares. My Tilta rig is the best solution for adding pieces to the camera and getting it in a handheld mode but still when will a camera be designed to really use it as a handheld camera with a proper viewfinder in the right position not in the back of the camera. Heck even on your shoulder. Maybe a viewfinder that can be moved from back to side without buying extra aftermarket products. The EVF is the oldest technology around and has been part of ENG cameras since they replaced film. It’s absurd that this one important piece now has to be purchased separately and configured with yet another piece of hardware to put it were it should have been in the first place. Why am I ranting? Because to date nothing has changed and the companies making these cameras must think the consumer will make the cameras work for themselves at our added expense. So lets see what Sony’s new F camera will be like. How much do you want to bet the viewfinder will be on the back of the camera?

Eric,
I have struggled with the same issues as I consider upgrades to my existing cams. I suppose going to a traditional shoulder mount is the real solution, but which one? It might not jive with the cinema style of the AF100, but have you considered a HPX370? More money yes, but you don’t have to frankenrig it to make it work and native Intra should be a nice thing. What do you use on your day gig?

Hi Grant.
I use the HPX370 as well. In fact it’s the main camera at the station. I don’t shoot image spots or commercial with it because I like the “look” of a sharp large sensor better so I either use my AF-100 or I rent a Sony F3. Mostly I use the AF-100 but I love the image of the F3 with good glass, and S-Log is magic!
The new Sony F camera I’m sure will be amazing but unaffordable for me to own. I do look forward to renting one as soon as the rental house gets one.
