Is it Worth Getting Dedicated Containers For Storing Wood Pellets?

March 21, 20260 Comments

The short answer is YES! It is absolutely worth getting dedicated containers for storing wood pellets, as they are hygroscopic, meaning they easily absorb moisture from the air, which ruins their burn quality, causes jams, and reduces smoke flavor. Dedicated containers, especially those with airtight seals, protect your pellets by keeping them dry and pest-free, too. The main pest for me is moisture. I live in sunny San Diego, but the nights cool down, and the humidity rises.

Before I got into this pellet grill game, I used them in smoking tubes on a gas grill. I still use them with the Traeger to get more moke flavor. I didn’t buy 18-pound bags at the time, as that would take years to use, but even the smaller bags, when I just folded the tops and left them in the gas grill cabinet, would get soggy and turn to mush.

With pellet grills, you dont want to use any pellets that have deteriorated, as they can clog the auger and cause issues. We need to store them properly so they are ready when we want to grill. I have a few options to consider, from cheap-as-chips to fancy and helpful. Let’s dive in.

Cheap as Chips

The most basic way to store your pellets is in the unopened bag, or in an open-top bag rolled up tight and clipped shut in a location that isn’t humid or prone to weather, like outside. In my area, I can leave an 18 lb bag in the garage year-round without issue, but I still prefer to move them to a container with a seal. Since you will be using the grill outdoors, the pellets end up near the smoker. If left out overnight, the cool, moist air will reach them, and bad things will happen.

The good old 5-gallon paint bucket is probably the cheapest option. These can be had for under $6.00 at Lowe’s and Home Depot. They work. A bit big, and the lids are a bit of a pain to take off.
A 5-gallon paint bucket holds approximately 20 to 30 pounds of wood pellets. A standard 20 lb bag fits easily with room to spare, while a 30 lb bag fits snugly up to the rim.

I think upgrading to a bucket with a screw-on lid, or at least a lid with a gasket, for the best possible seal is the better option. These cost more but are still affordable, and you can get a good deal if you buy a few together. I have been trying different brands such as Bear Mount and Lumber Jack, so having a few buckets makes sense.

I use the Traeger Grills Stay Dry Pellet Storage Bin with Locking Lid. It has a 22lb capacity, a stackable design, and is airtight. They also come with Flavor Type Stickers so you can ID your pellets and a few blanks for other types you might use. Retail for $40.00

Oklahoma Joe’s has a nice square bucket with a mesh basket insert that keeps wood dust from entering the auger. Wood pellet dust can damage and jam the auger motor, causing it to bind, seize, or become overworked, especially if it gets wet. Accumulated dust forms a thick, sludge-like, or solid substance when combined with moisture, resulting in severe clogs, restricted flow, or potential auger jams.
This option is the most expensive at $44.00

I’m very tempted to get the Oklahoma Joe’s Pellet Bucket Kit because I like the idea of reducing wood dust. Maybe it’s not such an issue, since the dust settles to the bottom of the container. If you pour the pellets in, be careful when the bucket is almost empty so you don’t get dust into the pellet hopper.

There are a lot of options on Amazon for pellet storage containers, and I feel it’s a good call to get at least an air-tight container. Pellets are not cheap at roughly $16 to 20 for an 18 lb bag, so you don’t want to waste your hard-earned money on pellets that turn to sawdust due to poor storage. I like the Traeger design because it’s tall and thin, and it stacks well, so it takes up less space.
