Atomos 4K Shogun Recorder Is Now Shipping Plus Features Video By CEO Jeromy Young

Looks really nice!

The Shogun is shipping in Europe today Dec 16th and tomorrow in the US. The Shogun should arrive in one week.

A couple of things that won’t work on the Shogun is playback. A few bugs are still in that function and Jeromy says it will be a couple weeks or around Christmas time before they fix the issue and release a firmware update. Also DNxHD won’t be included yet but will be in January with a free update.

One thing that still confuses me is what HDMI version the Shogun has. I’m under the impression that it has 1.4b and I’m  also not sure based on what I’ve read is that in 4K HDMI 1.4b is only 8bit. In the video Jeromy clearly states the Shogun’s HDMI in is 10bit. So that’s great news for GH4 owners that are interested in 10bit out to the Shogun. A7s? Nope. It doesn’t support 10bit out of HDMI.

The SDI in supports 12gig too but if you have a quad out of a camera a converter to combine 4 to 1 is needed. The kit is very loaded. New audio pigtail is also included.

Cant wait to get mine and see 4K ProRes from both the GH4 and A7s.

  1. The few video samples I’ve seen recorded with this unit are impressive. I am also pleased to see the audio features of this unit and what appears to be the ability to convert the hdmi video out to SDI. I have been thinking about getting a converter, but this unit would save me the cost of that device ($300-400). Shogun looks like a winning product for Atomos!
