The new Canon 7D has been released today. I think it looks like a wonderful stills camera but video users aren’t going to get excited about it. I’ll give you three reasons and they are all listed below. Full specs can be found HERE.

Nothing special really. Nice to have 60fps and uncompressed 4:2:2 output via HDMI oh and a headphone jack is nice too. Yeah I’m trying. Canon is focusing on the DSLR for photographers first. That’s fine. Since they revolutionized the film and production world with the 5D MARK II and original 7D we expected more from the DSLR’s released but Canon has the Cinema EOS line and that is the where they want large sensor video to be. Not in the DSLR. It’s now just a feature.
I think the real issue we have right now is that line also needs some basic features like true 60p and higher. We shall see. I’m sure a refresh for the C100 and C300 are coming soon and with the rise of the 4K camera it’s time. As of today Sony is really leading the pack with camera options and Panasonic too with the GH4.

Another APS-C camera came out today for around the same price, the Samsung NX1, looks really promising and has 4k. Glad to see Samsung innovating!
Exactly, Dave. This is just Canon trying to protect their cinema camera line by offering relatively minor upgrades when they could have done something much more exciting.
Nice write-up Erik! Canon are once again 2-3 years too late to the party. People are cranking out 4K dSLRS, and here’s Canon discovering fire with 1080/60p in 2014, shameful stuff really…
Events like this just teach us to always remain platform agnostic and to be ready to dismiss and abandon any gear manufacturer just as soon as they outlive their usefulness to us – we owe them nothing! Dave Dugdale has always done this and his recent move away from Canon is a great example of what we all need to be ready to do.
With DSLR video and Canon that train has left the station. Much better choices now. Even Nikon has made some big advancements in auto focus and image quality lately. However dont count Canon out. The Cinema EOS line is very strong still and the next generation will be too. If I’m wrong then they are cooked!
