Sony Introduces UMC-S3C Compact Full Frame High Sensitivity Multi Use 4K Camera

UMC-S3C-Right

Looks like the full frame a7sii sensor is making it’s way into other cameras. Sony introduces the UMC-S3C. A multi use high sensitivity camera in E-Mount. The UMC-S3C ISO levels go from 50-409600. The camera uses advanced imaging technologies from Sony’s consumer and professional groups – a full-frame 35mm Exmor sensor, to realize high sensitivity with high light condensing efficiency, and an image processing engine, which enhances noise reduction. Using compatible E-mount lenses that maximize the performance of the 35mm full-frame sensor, resolution is kept high across the entire image area.

“Area-specific noise reduction selectively divides images into areas based on patterns. Image quality is further enhanced through detail reproduction technology, allowing clear and sharp video recording in near pitch-black environments beyond the capabilities of the human eye. This helps optimized images fit various scenes while ensuring a more natural sense of dimension. In addition, the camera’s high shutter speed allows users to capture letters and numbers clearly.”

The camera comes in at under 1 lbs. No screen is on the back but live view can be achieved via HDMI output.

So what is the UMC-S3C designed for?  Disaster response; wildlife monitoring; landscape mapping or surveying; surveillance, inspections and investigations; live camera; and as a dashboard/professional point-of-view (‘POV’) camera, among others.

I’m interested in the rolling shutter performance on the camera. This is an issue with the a7s ii and the new a6300. It could make the POV application a tad rough.

The UMC-S3C has a memory card slot on the camera body instead of network cabling. With a 64GB memory card, you can record up to 125 minutes of 4K footage at standard quality (30 fps/60 Mbps). In 4K resolution. The camera also supports the XAVC S format for internal 4K recording at 100Mbps.

This high sensitivity surveillance type camera market is growing these days. If the price is right many productions like reality and wildlife are going to get shots that they never would have been able to get before. The price has not been announced yet. Sony’s UMC-S3C is planned to be available in the United States in August 2016.

  1. Fascinating! I wonder if this would be well enough equipped to be modded into part of a custom camera rig with EVF, audio stuff, etc. kind of like what people are doing with the mini Alexa.
