GH4 VLOG L Sample Grade Thanks To Nick Driftwood For Clip!

GH4 VLOG L pre and post grade

Today Nick Driftwood supplied a GH4 VLOG L sample clip for the world to play with. Nick is lucky enough to have the log mode installed on a GH4 to play with.

I downloaded the UHD clip and here is a grade with only a ARRI Alexa REC709 LUT dropped on. The image is large and is a JPEG. Click it to see it full size. It’s 3840 X 2160

rec709 lut ARRII think it looks pretty dang good! The clip was recorded in 10 bit 422 ProRes HQ with the Atomos Shogun.

Nick states that the GH4 VLOG L base ISO is 400 and 800 looks great. 1600 good. It feels like a stop over Cinelike D.

I can live with that. I think 😀 Some unknowns are what all can be tweaked in the profile. I know noise reduction and sharpness are the only settings in the gamma setting but what about the other ones like curves and such. I’m not actually that interested in changing settings since I found that doing so just adds noise and smooths skin so less is more with the GH4. Hey that rhymes. Ha!

The skin tone and texture are very pleasing. No smear or plastic to it and color is great. Yes it is graded with a simple LUT but that makes me feel pretty good knowing I didn’t have to work to get it that way.

Hopefully VLOG L will be released soon and it’s free. Download the clip and give it try and please let me know what you think.

  1. Erik – If you update your GH4 firmware to v2.3, you can select VLOG using the Image App. Once VLOG is enabled, you can save VLOG to one of the Custom Buttons for recall, without the need to use Image App. I’m sure Panasonic will undo this bug shortly, but if you want to experiment with VLOG you can do it now before it ships.

Currently the only settings I can see that can be changed are:
    Saturation
    Noise Reduction
    i.Resolution
