Its An Honor To Be Nominated.
What a night!
I recieved Six Emmy nominations for my work at NBC7 San Diego. This is the most nominations I’ve ever had and I’m truly grateful. Also for what I believe is a first, everyone in the creative services Dept. had at least one nomination this year. How cool is that!.
These nominations have more meaning to me this time around. Here’s why. Two years ago our creative services dept. was outsourced to a marketing company out of New York. It was devastating. Everyone was laid off except me and the art director. I felt like I survived a plane crash. Saying good bye to people I worked with for so many years was painful. At the time I wasn’t sure if they where keeping me. One by one they went to HR and ended their careers here. It saddens me to write this still.
I worked for two years not shooting any promos or commercials. Only editing sweeps promos and picking up the promotion crumbs that the agency couldn’t handle. I was surviving, not creating. For me it was a very painful two years. I remember the last Emmy I won and said in my acceptance speech that this will probably be the last time I will be up here and I really believed that was the case. Our industry was a mess. Our station was too.
Here is a very nervous version of me in 2010 accepting my Emmy for Photography/Cinematography . And yes it was hot in their with a tux on.
Now we have new owners. They fired that agency and I got my role back. I’m a Producer/DP/Director and editor again.
During those times when I wasn’t creating I kept learning. Cameras where getting smaller and the sensors got bigger. I reveled in this new filmic look. When I got my role back I started shooting promos with an AF-100 and adding cine lenses as well to get even better images. I hear all the time that cameras are just tools and it’s the operator that makes great images. Well for the most part that’s true but a camera can inspire. And that’s what the Panasonic AF-100 has done for me. It has inspired me. I push myself to have better composition, I now can control how much of the background I want with shallow depth of field. This alone is huge. Resolution is also so much better. It goes on and on. When people see “the look” they like it. And so do I.
I enjoy what I do for a living and I know that I’m lucky to be doing it. Hopefully I will be able to continue developing as an artist and have the opportunity to shoot with new cameras that will inspire me.
