Panasonic Could Be Releasing A New DVX100 Style 4K Camera At NAB

DVX 100

Andrew Reid over on EOSHD has the scoop on a new potentially cool 4K entry from Panasonic. Below is from EOSHD.

Writing on his blog, Panasonic director of professional imaging Kunihiko Miyagi says the company has decided to “try and create another disruption in the industry and hit like the DVX100″.

The DVX100 was a popular indie-filmmaking camera of 10 years ago, alas only with a fixed lens.

I hope Miyagi San’s words relate to a interchangeable lens AF200 or a higher end GH4 aimed at the pro market.

The allusions to the DVX100 hint at it being reasonably priced, certainly I’d expect under $6k.

Here’s the Panasonic teaser –

“Do you remember AG-DVX100? As a DV camera capable of film-like shooting with Cine-like gamma and a 24p mode, a groundbreaking camera in the industry. I am proud to say that it was a big hit for us, and it has been widely used and loved by customers around the world for over ten years.

“Now, in a world where 4K shooting is fast becoming the norm, we’ve decided to go for a new breakthrough, and try to create another disruption in the industry and hit like the DVX100. I hope you’ll come to the Panasonic booth at NAB and see what we have in mind.”

I have also been told a significant Panasonic GH4 firmware update is due with LOG and perhaps even raw.

Check the blog tonight and tomorrow as the story develops.

So what does this mean? A fixed lens camcorder or a Af-100 type MFT camera. I think the later would be a much better option. I loved the AF-100. It was a ground breaking camera too that put the features we needed into a camera that made shooting easier. I was bummed when Panasonic dropped it after a less than exciting V2 update. I sure hope they can take what they have learned from the GH4 and come up with a updated 4K AF-100.

Now what if it’s a MFT fixed lens 4K camera? Well that might not be a bad thing either. Anyone that already has a GH4 will scoop it up and find ways to incorporate it. It really has to be MFT to be able to become a A-Camera. I dont think we can go back to smaller sensors and the MFT size is perfect medium giving nice shallow depth without razors edge focus issues. Anyway this is all great to think about but I know something is coming and Monday we will know.

Really interesting and great find by Andrew. I cant wait to get on the plane to NAB.
