Panasonic GH4 Gets Another Firmware Update. V2.0. Anamorphic Anyone?

This is an interesting update. Panasonic added a few new features. Nothing ground breaking but if you have anamorphic lenses you might enjoy this update. In addition to 16:9 aspect ratio you now have 4:3/3:2/1:1. Time to look for some lenses to play with these settings. Unfortunately Anamorphic is only available in NTSC 29.97. Booooo! I’m sure this will change in the next .1 update. Seems odd to have cinema resolutions with broadcast frame rates.

Panasonic seems to like the idea of pulling stills from 4K images and this update improves it yet again. Also lets you add markers to get to the frame you’re looking for easier during playback

Like shooting in .mpg? You now can in 4K/23.98p/ at 100Mbps.

A little ISO tweaks too. The upper limit of the ISO sensitivity can be set in the menu of ISO sensitivity setting and emission amount of flash light can be adjusted in the menu of exposure compensation.

Exif information is embedded to the captured image from the 4K video. This is interesting. I wish video carried EXIF info. That would great to know what ISO, profile and lens info in a video file. Someday I hope.

Most of the updates are photography related and listed in full below.

The GH4 V2.0 update can be downloaded HERE.

  1. [4K PHOTO] mode is added which records 4K video exclusively for capturing a frame to save as a photo.
      • Settings can be adjusted as below when entering this mode.
    -Rec Format : MP4
    -Rec Quality : 4K/30p/100Mbps
    (System Frequency 59.94Hz)
    4K/25p/100Mbps
    (System Frequency 50.00Hz)
    -Luminance Level:0-255
    • In addition to 16:9 aspect, 4:3/3:2/1:1 can be selected.
    • Exif information is embedded to the captured image from the 4K video.
    • Marking function is available enables marker setting on the designated point while recording video and users can jump to the markers when playing back the video to capture the frame they want.
    • Loop Recording function is added, with which the camera keeps on recording video while deleting the old footage automatically.
  2. 4K/23.98p/100Mbps mode is added in MP4 video recording.
  3. The upper limit of the ISO sensitivity can be set in the menu of ISO sensitivity setting and emission amount of flash light can be adjusted in the menu of exposure compensation.
  4. Focusing performance of 1-area AF in video recording is improved.
  5. Tracking performance of tracking AF when used with the interchangeable lens H-FS14140 is improved.
  6. Remote shooting via USB tethering is available by using PC software “USB Tether” supplied by Promote Systems.

  1. Hi Erik, I have the GH4 and have updated the firmware. Am keen to find out if this cures the problem of not being to get a 4K 25p signal out via micro HDMI on the camera. Atomos say they are working closely with Panasonic – and I’pm sure they are – but without this fix their Shogun will not be an option in the immediate future.
    Thanks
    John

    • I dont think this is addressed in the update. I would like to see some more video features updated but it seems they are working on stills from video with the last two updates. I hope the GH4 gets timecode out from the HDMI and hopefully address your issue too with the next update. I do think they will come after the Shogun ships. I hope….

      • Ey!! Try this app ExifTool / pyExifToolGUI. It read exif info from your video files of the GH4. I read your article, and i think. Crap!, this app is very unknown and very usefull, and well, i expect you like it.
You provide very good information about GH4, and i want to help you a little, like your info help me.
