The new 4K Atomos Shogun is looking to be a very capable 4K recorder for both the Panasonic GH4 and the Sony A7s. In such a short amount of time these two cameras have changed the landscape for hybrid cameras. They both are for the most part video first and stills second. This type of camera is something Canon hasn’t addressed yet if they ever do. But hey enough about that! If you have either of these cameras or are interested in 4K acquisition and want to get the absolute best from them the Atomos Shogun is the most affordable and feature rich available today. I love mine and I think it’s great to be able to know exactly what you’re shooting actually looks like.
I for one really want to know how good both the A7s and the GH4 are in 4K. The GH4 internal 4K is very impressive but the Sony A7s is still yet to be seen outside of a couple Sony demos and the Shogun will make it easy to acquire.
I’m looking forward to getting one. I think the Ninja Blade is a great recorder/monitor and the Shogun takes it up a notch. We shall see. and see it in 4K!

I am confused between GH4 and A7s like many (I already have one GH4 which is back-ordered, so should I get a 2nd or an A7s is the question). I just
sold my 5DMkIII and GH3.
I like many will only be doing HD delivery and I was wondering if 4k acquisition in GH4 together with Neat Video (I hope you have used this) can make a decent low light camera.
By low light I don’t mean “darkness” which is a fund demo for the A7s but practically I will not shoot (and anyways if once in a month or 2 I need to shoot something like that can always rent the A7s).
What are your thoughts?
If GH4+Neat can not work then it has to be A7s and Shogun for me.

Tough call. The two cameras are so different. I like the GH4 for internal 4K. It looks great and delivering in HD is very good. The weakest point with the GH4 is the noise past 1600 ISO. If you don’t have to push it then it’s a non issue. The GH4 is capable of 10 bit 4:2:2 out from the HDMI. That’s impressive. It’s an amazing value and a lot of camera for the money.
The A7s requires more tweaking. Log is noisy at ISO 3200 and I’m still learning how to drive this camera. I hit a few curbs along the way. Full frame has a look that I like and I think I can get more from it. 4K is still yet to be seen and how it will look when recorded to the Shogun. A complete retest will need to be done.
