When three big players join forces to create a camera system like the DXL you now it’s going to special. This is what happened. The new Millennium DXL Panavision camera uses Panavision optics with a RED 8K sensor and Light Iron color science. All working together for a smooth acquisition to post workflow. At least that’s the theory and it looks impressive. Also Panavision lenses are a big deal since Light Iron color science is going to take the color of the lenses into account as well and Panavision has some great anamorphic offerings too. A very complete system indeed. I’m very surprised by how small and compact the body is.
Don’t expect to be able to run out and get one. I’m sure it’s a rental only for big budget movies. Dual recording 8K and 4K proxy ProRes or DNx will be very helpful in post production and having 8K also means when it’s mastered out it will look even better. Always good to have more resolution than what you finish with. Now I’m talking high end here and wish I could shoot everything in 4K but I’m not ready for that. Yet 😀
ARRI has been the go to camera for a long time and the Alexa 65 is getting out more these days. It’s great to see Panavision come out strong like this. Hopefully we will see some footage come out soon.
Panavision will have the DXL on display at Cine Gear Expo, June 2-5 in Los Angeles, where they will also screen footage shot with the camera.
