The New Sony F5 Has Landed

And boy does it look good. All the info at Sony.com Below are some of the highlights. Still trying to guess how much this camera will go for but the specs so far are great. And yes it does have built in ND filters! and a viewfinfer in the right position. Way to go Sony!!!!!!

Internal recording on SxS cards up to 10 bit 100 Mbps 4:2:2 now. Future upgrade will give you 2K and 220, 440 Mbps. The upgrade thing is always a mystery to your wallet. The only way to record 4K is with a AXS-R5 recorder. Again. No idea on prices. I’m sure they will be announced tomorrow.

The F55 has a electronic global shudder. That’s HUGE! Sony claims rolling shutter issues completely gone. Wow!

Here is a download LINK TO THE PDF for the F5.

  1. Amazing piece of equipment!

Unfortunately I’m guessing it will go for +$15k.

Right now I’m like you… when will we see a good substitute (more or less future proof) for our beloved, but already surpassed, AF100? Will it be next year at NAB? Close to the end of the year? Or will it actually be an indirect successor like the 4k varicam?

I think that Panasonic will keep competing on the under 2k market (namely with the GH3) and the +$10k with the Varicam, but not in between, which is sad, because I don’t have the budget for that, although it would be a great future proof option, just like this Sony F… 🙁

    Best regards!

    • I think your 15K for the F5 brain and a few bits might be close to what Sony will offer it at. I’m afraid MFT might be to late now at least for cinema cameras from Panasonic. It really will have to be a amazing camera for it to be successful. The market has changed dramatically in the year and a half since the release of the AF-100. Who knows. Maybe we will be surprised. I sure have been blown away many times already this year!
