I think adding DNxHD in a MXF wrapper is great update for PC users who are moving away from Quicktime and .MOV. I hope to see more recorders doing the same soon. To me ProRes is dated and not as efficient as Cineform and DNxHD are. Smaller file with better IQ with cross platform freedom for exporting.

Yes I know we all like waveform. Maybe on the next update but false color is very handy once you get used to using it.

The update is for both the 7” Blackmagic Video Assist 4K model as well as the 5″ Blackmagic Video Assist.

Nice update! and the price is very good too for the 5″at $495.
and the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 4K 7″ for $895

  1. Some pretty nice updates, but it seems they haven’t addressed a major issue with cameras like the Sony A7SII when it comes to outputting progressive. As it stands you have to make the conversion after the fact in your edit software.

Quote from an earlier review: As a recorder, it works well as long as your camera outputs progressive over HDMI, or you actually want to shoot interlaced with a Sony (yes some people still do). It is also impressive to get both SDI and HDMI on the same recorder at this price point. That said if you want internal pulldown or need features like audio control you are better off with something like an Atomos Ninja Blade.

You can see the complete review here. It would be nice if they fixed this but I don’t think they did. http://www.newsshooter.com/2015/11/10/blackmagic-design-video-assist-with-firmware-version-1-1-reviewed-a-495-recorder-for-the-masses/
