Is the Samsung NX1 on it’s way to being discontinued?

Samsung NX1

Andrew Reid from EOSHD broke this story and has added more info today. It looks like the Samsung NX1 is going to be discontinued in Europe. Below is a quote from Samsung. Check out the entire post on EOSHD. It’s very interesting.

“We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras. This is specific to the region – and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets. We will continue to thoroughly evaluate market conditions and will make further adjustments to maintain our competitiveness in emerging Camera categories.”

The mirrorless Hybrid market is dominated by Sony and Panasonic right now and the NX1 didn’t really get a foot in the door. I feel the H.265 codec was to early to market. No NLE supported it for a long time and the compression is hard on computers making editing it a strain.

Sony has been relentless with mirrorless camera releases and it’s going to continue. Sony says they plan to release new versions in six month cycles. SIX MONTHS! This is hard for consumers to keep up with let alone a new comer like Samsung to break in. We all love our lenses. It’s what keeps us brand loyal for the most part. I have struggled wit the first A7s because of how poor the Metabones adapter worked with it and Canon lenses. It’s still a problem and since I wrote this article on How The A7s Drives Me Crazy I have given in and purchased native Sony E-Mount lenses. Now I enjoy the Sony system a lot. So much so I sold and am selling all my Panasonic Lumix bodies and lenses. I cant have three systems. EF mount, MFT and now Sony E Mount. I just can afford it.

Samsung has their own mount to. Ugh. So you buy a NX1 for $1200 and you now have to either live with adapters again or buy Samsung lenses. It’s an expensive decision for sure.

Competition is good for us consumers and I do worry we wont have much with the way Sony is dominating right now. but then it looks like Sony is competing with themselves now anyway. Canon needs to get in while Samsung steps out.

So if Samsung did a few tweaks to the NX1 like a better codec option. Maybe even ProRes. Now that would stir things up right? Then maybe it would have a chance. It needs to stand out in a way the others don’t and to me it just doesn’t.

  1. I totally agree with you about the NX1 because I bought one and thought it was going to be amazing and transcoding footage wouldn’t be that bad. WOW I was wrong and the NX1 was really hard to get to just work correctly. I once lost a three hour shoot because by switching modes it put it in full auto and we didn’t realize it. So its the small stuff that makes it not refined when a gh4 just works. I really hope the rumor is not true and Samsung comes out will some killer tech that works so they keep pushing other companies.
