My First Promo Shoot with the Sony FS7

This is basically my first promo I shot with the Sony FS7. It’s a simple little :15 second spot and it actually took a whole 30 minutes to shoot. We had some fun keeping it light. Our news promos are generally not quirky. Those days are long gone and I have to admit I kind of miss doing them. Never the less when you get a chance to have a little fun go for it! 😀

The copy was very difficult to memorize right? It’s all in the delivery. It wasn’t easy keeping them focused without laughing to much, but we got it.

I set up only two KinFlo Divas and had the Sony FS7 was set to Slog3 and Cinema. The grade was pretty straight forward in Premiere Pro CC 2015.1 I tried a few LUTS but they just didn’t give me a good start so I did the grade from scratch.

The audio was captured with two Sanken COS 11 Lav mics hidden in the clothing. I don’t like seeing mics and neither should you.

Our studio is getting a strong green cast lately. It has something to do with the aging window tint on them. Since we are moving soon we aren’t fixing these type of things. It does make it harder to grade it out.

So far I like the FS7 a lot. Still getting used to it but it doesn’t take long to get up to speed with it. Lenses are still an issue for me. I really like the One Shot AF on the C300. On the Sony’s with the Metabones adapter all AF sucks. Works great with native Sony lenses but the electronic focus by wire in manual well…. Sucks too! Ha! Check out the post on “Why I Choose the FS7” HERE I do think I need to shoot one stop over with Slog3. It does seem a little noisy but I’m okay with it. The noise is more organic and not that ugly RGB crud. Cleans up easy if you need to.

I used the Sony FE 90mm Macro and the manual focus on this lens is so much better than the rest of the native Sony’s I’ve tried. I wish they would make more like the 90mm macro G lens. Whose with me?

A question I get asked a lot is “how do you like the Sony color?” I have to say it’s fine to me. I grade everything anyway so I get what I want from the image. I don’t miss Canon when Shooting with my Sony’s. Maybe I’m not that picky. ( yeah right! 😀 )

All in all a successful shoot. This might be my last post of 2015 so have a Happy New Year everyone! Hope to see you all in 2016.

Cheers!

Erik

  1. Good work Erik. I really would like to say this was better than your previous work but I still prefer the look color and image of the Canon and GH4. I am going through the same problem as Sony has a very diferent and particular look. Not as good as I would like. I am keeping the A7sII and BMs but the FS-7 is going….Difficult option but moving on to RED.

  2. nice grade there erik..would you please elaborate your grading process..that would be very helpful…btw ive been using your pp for a7s for quite some time and like it a lot..thanks
