FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS, Sony

The lens design is unique with it’s anodization optic inside that helps to create smooth round bokeh while keeping the image sharp. The added element nearly eliminates peripheral highlight distortion from vignetting and works with the 11-blade circular aperture to produce pleasing out-of-focus areas. However, a side effect of the element is a reduction in light transmission. The 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is rated here as T5.6 when set to the lens’s maximum f/2.8 aperture. Another benefit of this lens is a 1:4 magnification ratio along with a minimum focus distance of 1.9′; a ring switch is present to choose between standard shooting and close-up distances.

Unfortunately the FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS is also has a focus by wire system so using the lens in manual focus or adding a follow focus will not give you reputable pulls. This will have to tested but highly doubtful.

The lens options are growing for Sony EF and E mount users. Good to see too since I’ve had not so much luck with adapters and autofocus. It seems going native is the best solution if you want to take full advantage of AF in both video and stills modes. The new 100mm cost $1498 and is available for pre-orders Feb 9th.
